FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A family baby sitter admitted molesting the daughter of one of Florida's most influential lobbyists in court today.
Normally Channel 10 News does not reveal the identity of victims of sexual crimes, but in this case, Ron Book and his daughter Lauren (pictured, right) want their story told.
"Tomorrow's my 18th birthday. So I'll be an adult now and she can't touch (me). She may have tarnished my childhood, but she cannot hurt my adulthood," Lauren said.
This morning in court, Waldina Flores (pictured, below left), formerly the Book family baby sitter, apologized to the entire Book family for five years of sexual abuse that started when her victim was 12 years old, and accepted a plea deal. She was sentenced to 15 years behind bars and 15 years of probation.
"Maybe it's not as long as it could have been, but it spares our daughter from going through a painful trial and reliving the nightmare and horrors that she has gone through," Ron Book said.
Book went on to say that Flores manipulated his daughter and brainwashed her, convincing her to keep silent about the abuse. He also said that he thought he knew Flores, and she was practically a member of the family.
"She went everywhere we went. She did everything that we did. There was very little that she went wanting, whether it was her health care or any other needs," Book said.
Book also had a message for other parents.
"Don't be so sure about who's watching your children. (And) those people who are caregivers, you will be found. You will be prosecuted. You will go to jail, and you will go to jail for a long time," he said.
Book said he was very proud of his daughter and the two of them are working to strengthen sexual predator laws.
