Man charged in death of girl found in stream
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (AP) -- A man has been arrested in the death of an a 10-year-old girl, who was found dead in a stream after she apparently accepted a ride from a stranger while returning home from an errand.
Charles James Hickman, 25, was charged Wednesday with murder, felony murder and criminal confinement in the killing of Katlyn "Katie" Collman, Crothersville police Chief Norman Ford said in a statement.
Hickman, of Crothersville, was jailed Wednesday awaiting his initial court hearing. If convicted, Hickman could face the death penalty or life in prison.
A state trooper found Collman's body Sunday, five days after authorities say she took a ride from a young man in a white truck after buying toilet paper. Her body was discovered in a remote wooded area north of Crothersville.
The girl's death was the first homicide in 25 years in the town of about 1,500 people some 40 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky.
State police issued a statewide Amber Alert last Thursday after they received enough information on the suspect's vehicle.
