Swedish FM's killer accused of beating

    August 02 2006 at 06:40PM

Stockholm, Sweden - The man convicted of murdering Foreign Minister Anna Lindh has been charged with assaulting a fellow patient at a psychiatric clinic last year, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

Mijailo Mijailovic - who confessed to the 2003 fatal stabbing of Lindh at a Stockholm department store - beat the patient several times with a metal bar last September, fracturing the man's head and arms, and forcing doctors to amputate one of his fingertips, prosecutor Bertil Mansson said.

At the time, Mijailovic was being treated for mental problems at the clinic in Sundsvall, about 380km north of Stockholm. He has since been sent back to prison to serve a life sentence for Lindh's murder.

Mansson said Mijailovic confessed to the clinic assault but has not been willing to provide details of the incident or explain his actions.

Charges were filed in a Sundsvall court on Tuesday but no date has been set for trial, Mansson said. If convicted, he could be ordered to pay damages to the patient, he said.

Mijailovic' lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment. - Sapa-AP
