Mijailovic wants to stay in Sweden

Anna Lindh's killer, Mijailo Mijailovic, has withdrawn his appeal to a decision preventing him from serving his sentence in Serbia.

"Mijailovic will accept that he is going to serve his sentence in Sweden. He no longer believes that he has any chance of being transferred to Serbia. He has ended up in a catch 22 situation," lawyer Mikael Nilsson told news agency TT.

According to his lawyer, Mijailovic is tired of the uncertainty surrounding his future and wants to move on.

"He has realized that Sweden and Serbia can never agree on this issue and is now trying to make the best of the situation," said Nilsson.

Mijailovic, 28, was born in Sweden to Serbian parents and has renounced his Swedish citizenship. Now solely a citizen of Serbia, he had asked to be transferred from the maximum security prison in Sweden where he is currently held, to a prison in Serbia.

He had previously argued for a transfer on the basis that he did not feel safe in a Swedish prison but his lawyer hinted that this may no longer be the case.

"The period he has so far spent in prison has been quite free of controversies," said Nilsson.

Mijailo Mijailovic was sentenced in December 2004 to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court for the murder the previous year of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh.

In February 2005 Mijailovic requested a transfer to Serbia.

Earlier this year, the Prison and Probation Service ruled against Mijailovic's request because Serbian prison officials had been unable to confirm how long a sentence Mijailovic would serve in Serbia.
