Investigators do not want to speculate on why Jennifer San Marco did what she did, while some postal employees believe the shootings may have been racially motivated. Investigators will no confirm that.
All eight people San Marco shot and killed were minorities.
And it turns out, when San Marco lived in New Mexico, she got a license to start a publication called "The Racist Press."
Postal Service employee John Thayer says he made eye contact with San Marco during the chaos thinking she would shoot him too. But he says, she walked away looking for others to kill.
"I was standing right beside the other guy, I wasn't running or anything. She could have shot me. She could have. She couldn't have missed me. I was standing right there. I'm 6 foot 4," says Thayer.
Thayer suggests that tougher security measures should be put in place. Officials say an investigation will determine if that is necessary, and also mentioned that an extensive background check is done on all new employees.
The Santa Barbara County investigators held a press conference on Wednesday to share where the investigation currently stands.
Detectives confirmed that the shooter, San Marco, had a history of mental problems, which resulted in her psychological leave from the Postal Service, and that she had not worked at the Goleta facility in nearly 3 years.
Investigators want to interview anyone who may have encountered her, and say they are doing their best to find answers as to why this tragedy occurred.
"Our investigation has many components and I appreciate the public's patience while we investigate this fully," says Sheriff Jim Anderson.
At the Goleta postal facility flowers are laid at the entrance, as crews clean up inside.
