Jewish Prison Penpals
It seems that many Jewish inmates are having trouble in practising their faith in prison.
Some of these inmates have written to Sid Kleiner, President of 'Beth Tikvah Jewish Prisoner Outreach',
and he has forwarded their letters to me.I have decided to post the addresses of the inmates involved and hope that caring people of the same faith will take contact with them. If the prison authorities see that people know what is going on, things may change for the better.
My way of seeing things is that people accused and convicted of crimes are sent to prison to pay the official penalties of the crimes committed.
As far as I know the punishment excludes religious persecution at the hands of prison personnel.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Dear Florida Department of Corrections Officials,
This organization offers its kudos and commendations to interim Corrections Secretary, James McDonough, and his staff for conscientiously attempting to restore order out of chaos, sanity out of madness---and so much more.
Roger A. Eichelberger was born in Israel of Jewish parents. Thus, there is little doubt about his being qualified for and entitled to whatever Jewish programs the FDOC may have to offer.
Mr. Eichelberger has repeated shared his problems and concerns with FDOC officials.
Most of his appeals to state officials were never acknowledged. Needless to say, I am accustomed to similar treatment, but I am not locked up and being deprived of my religious rights either.According to Mr. Eichelberger’s allegations, he has been threatened and intimidated by staff when pressing forward in a quest to practice the tenets of his birth-faith. He even alleges being beaten in connection with his aspirations to adhere to his Judaic beliefs!
I possess countless pages of reports from Mr. Eichelberger, detailing all the numerous and obvious shortcomings of FDOC’s treatment of a combat veteran who is disabled and ill. He certainly isn’t asking to be beaten and denied his religious rights. Roger cringes at the thought that all too many phony, counterfeit, self-serving proclaimed Jews have been admitted into the JDA program, while authentic Jews have to beg to be accommodated.
My sincere request is that a neutral, unbiased person speak with Mr. Eichelberger in private and determine what can be done to afford this veteran the basic religious rights that are guaranteed to him by the nation he was willing to die for. Further, the biased remarks, intimidation, retaliation, threats, etc. by staff should come to a screeching halt. There is no room for bigotry in the FDOC.
I would appreciate it if I received more than an overdose of silence to this request to determine what has and is happening to a disabled Jewish veteran in your care and custody.

Many thanks for the very lovely holiday card. We will be cruising the Caribbean as we munch our matzahs three times each day. Under separate cover I am sending you the following items:

I am most interested in your declaring that “…I will be assaulted again.”
On page 2 you write, “…but I was unable to report it because several officers were ones who had the guy to assault me.” If I understand your words correctly, there were several guards who ordered an inmate to assault you.My friend, this simply is not acceptable. I am having similar problems at other institutions. It is an indication of an out-of-control system that displays unethical, unprofessional and law-breaking conduct. If you feel brave, you can furnish the names of the officers and the inmates and I will request a formal investigation. I will also advise FDOC’s hierarchy that further harm to you (retribution, punishment for telling the truth, etc.) will result in my requesting a Justice Department investigation.
We will be watching what happens to you from here on out.
I have seen evidence of anti-Semitism in the FDOC in recent weeks. Let one and all know that this organization will use every means at its disposal to stop the abuse of human beings simply because they are Jewish.

Delbert Highman was transferred to the Florida DOC from another state. He apparently is being harassed by prison staff and his prayer shawl was desecrated. Read an extract from Sid's latest letter to Delbert..

...Regardless, my friend, I wanted to briefly let you know that I received your three-page missive describing the “kangaroo court” that conducted your non-hearing hearing.
To say that I was shocked and appalled to read that Lt. Peterson was one of two presiding officers is to understate my state of mind. I literally dropped all other priority matters and sent a letter of complaint to FDOC’s leadership.
I have asked that this mockery of justice be investigated and that you be granted a fair, unbiased hearing. One cannot remain silent when the rights of others are compromised and abrogated!About the tzitzit, Delbert: I was granted permission to send Chaplain Morrison a brand-new, made-in-Israel tallit to replace the one that was desecrated. If you have not received it by now, please let me know and I will check things out from this end. I do not recommend that you try and repair the desecrated shawl.

G’ Day To FDOC’s Upper-Echelon Management Team!
I contact you today with expressions of concern for the above-captioned inmate.
In his latest letter (3-22-06), Mr. Diaz indicates that he is enduring “mental torture” at the hands of Columbia’s staff. He states that they wish for him to confess to something that he never did. He further alleges that he’s been threatened because of certain information that he shared with me. In essence, advises Diaz, he’s been ordered to clam up if he wants his life to resemble some semblance of normalcy.
At the time of his writing, Samuel advises that he is refusing his meals. Further, he advises that, “…they are all trying to whitewash this ordeal, trying to break my spirit.” I am certain that Commissions Secretary James McDonough doesn’t want the alleged infractions of his lower-echelon staff to be whitewashed, minimized or glossed over.
