FBI determines that remains found are those of Dylan Groene
COEUR d'ALENE -- The human remains discovered near a remote camping spot outside St. Regis, Mont., are those of missing 9-year-old Dylan Groene.
"According to the FBI lab in Quantico, Va., the remains have been positively identified as Dylan Groene," Kootenai County Sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger said.
Wolfinger made the announcement Sunday in a statement-only press conference. Investigators would not take further questions from the news media. Although the search for missing children is now over, investigators are continuing to collect information about the complex case and learn more about the man who they believe committed the gruesome crimes.
"Investigators continue to follow other leads," Wolfinger said.
Joseph E. Duncan III, of Fargo, N.D., is being held without bail at the Kootenai County jail on two charges of first-degree kidnapping. If convicted, Duncan, a registered level-3 sex offender, could face the death penalty.
"Out of respect for the Groene family and maintaining the integrity of the investigation and the prosecution of this matter, there will be no further comment regarding these remains," he said.
Shasta Groene was discovered at the Coeur d'Alene Denny's restaurant July 2 and her brother's remains were found just two days later in rugged mountainous country near the Idaho/Montana border. Investigators believe Duncan took the brother and sister to the remote camping area and repeatedly molested them.
Investigators have said they believe Duncan planned the abductions of Shasta and Dylan and committed the three murders at the Wolf Lodge Bay home in May.
Duncan is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the charges July 19 in front of Magistrate Judge Benjamin Simpson.
