SUNRISE ARREST

Sex, sadism tale in sedate Weston

jkripalani@herald.com

The tale state investigators tell is a chilling one.

First, they said, he lured her with friendly conversations on a telephone chat line. Then he kidnapped her. Then he tied her to a weight bench, whipped her, beat her and sexually assaulted her -- over the course of a week.

At one point, they said, he stuffed a rag in her mouth to muffle her screams.

All in a quiet, gated subdivision in wealthy Weston.

More ominous, Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents say, the 18-year-old may not be the only victim.

On Wednesday night, FDLE agents and Sunrise police arrested the accused man, Marvin Buckley, 30, after staking out his home in Sunrise, which he recently moved.

On Thursday, agents held a news conference in Miami in hopes of finding other victims. ''Things about this case led us to believe it was not the first time,'' said FDLE Deputy Director Dominick Pape.

Pape and his agents outlined their case against Buckley: On June 1, Buckley and the teenager met in person for the first time, in Homestead.

On June 4, agents said, he drove her to his home in Weston's Mariposa Pointe subdivision, where he demanded she dance and undress. When she refused, they said, he took her to an upstairs bedroom, forced her onto a weight bench, took out a whip and whipped her shoulders back, arms and legs. Then he tied her to the bench and held her prisoner for the next seven days, agents said.

At one point, agents said, the woman told Buckley she had given someone his home address and he responded by wrapping her in a bedsheet and dragging her down a flight of stairs, according to the FDLE report. The following day, June 11, he forced her to take pain medication and sleeping pills, agents said. Finally, Buckley drove her to a home in Polk County, where the teen managed to escape and call 911.

She was treated at Osceola Regional Medical Center, said Polk County sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers.

Because the woman is an alleged sexual assault victim, FDLE released little information about her, other than that she was from Florida, had just turned 18 and had met Buckley on a toll-free chat line. On the phone, Buckley and the woman began what Pape called a ''friendly'' relationship.

It took law-enforcement agents 13 days to identify Buckley because of his many aliases.

He used the name Sean Alfredo Dupree -- a name police mistakenly booked him with until his fingerprints matched those of a Marvin Buckley on the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office database. The kidnap victim knew him as ``Mike.''

If convicted, Buckley faces life in prison, Pape said. He has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, sexual battery, armed kidnapping and possession of a firearm.

Neighbor Tyra Schaumburg said she rented the town house next to Buckley's. Schaumburg said she never heard anything unusual. Sometimes her terrier Josi would run into his garage and she would apologize. Buckley would simply shrug and shut his garage door, she said.
