An Anaheim junior high school teacher was arrested Friday on suspicion of having sex with a 14-year-old female student.

Carlos Jose Melendez, 32, a teacher at Ball Junior High School, was taken into custody after the student's parents notified police of the alleged sexual contact, said Sgt. Rick Martinez, a spokesman for the Anaheim Police Department.

"We immediately launched an investigation which resulted in our asking him to come to the police station today," Martinez said.

"We believe that he had inappropriate sexual contact with this minor for a period of time — there was more than one encounter."

There appeared to be only one victim, police said, and the case is being investigated with the cooperation of the Anaheim Union High School District.

Melendez's bail was set at $100,000, Martinez said.
