A Deerfield Beach baseball coach was arrested late Tuesday on charges of having sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl, Boca Raton police said.
Andrew Mark Schafer, 23, was arrested after the girl's mother brought the allegations forward to investigators, police spokesman Sgt. Robert DeNeve said. Schafer was charged with lewd or lascivious battery on an underage victim. The offense occurred in Boca Raton.
Schafer was a baseball coach at Zion Lutheran Christian School in Deerfield Beach before he was fired after rumors of the sexual incident made their way around campus. The girl is a student at the private Christian school.
Schafer and two other baseball coaches at the school met the girl and one of her friends last week at a charity event in Deerfield Beach, DeNeve said. They later went to dinner, and the girls went to one of the coach's homes in Boca Raton. After a few hours, the three coaches and two teen girls went to a bar, where the men convinced the bouncer to let them all in, DeNeve said. Once inside, one of the coaches bought one of the girls a beer, DeNeve said.
They all went back to the Boca Raton home where Schafer and the 15-year-old were left alone to watch a movie, DeNeve said. It was during this time that the two engaged in sexual conduct, he said.
So far, Schafer and one other coach have been fired.
