Former Beulah Academy of Science teacher Ashley Tubbs, 29, was sentenced Wednesday to one year of community control, or house arrest, and five years on probation more than two years after her arrest on charges involving a sexual offense against a 13-year-old male student, according to the case prosecutor.
Assistant State Attorney Thomas Berrigan said the victim's parents agreed that the sentencing was appropriate and in the best interest of their child.
"They did not want their son to have to go through a trial, so they felt that this option was the best," Berrigan said.
Circuit Judge Linda Nobles sentenced Tubbs, who surrendered to police on Oct. 4, 2002, several months after authorities began investigating a student party at Tubbs' residence.
Tubbs told police then that she consumed alcohol and took medication, including a sleeping pill. According to the report, she was unable to recall details of the rest of the evening, but she remembered feeling "funny" the next morning.
In November, Tubbs pleaded no contest to the second-degree felony sex charge and the first-degree misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
