| *** THE CASE OF WALTER T STOREY *** On Missouri Death Row.. For the 3rd time, a jury will be asked to sentence a St. Charles County man convicted of slashing the throat of his neighbor in 1990. Walter Timothy Storey, 32, has been given the death sentence by two separate juries for the slaying of Jill Lynn Frey, and twice the Missouri Supreme Court has overturned the punishment and called for a new sentencing hearing. In 1995, the Supreme Court overturned Storey's death sentence on the grounds that Storey's attorney was ineffective. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court announced it had overturned his 2nd death sentence, set in 1997, because of mistakes made by the court. Storey didn't testify at the sentencing phase in 1997, and his attorney asked the court to remind jurors that defendants have a constitutional right not to testify and that jurors should not infer anything adverse from his decision. The court wrongly refused the instruction, the Supreme Court said in overturning the death sentence. Storey has been on death row for about eight years for killing Frey, 36. Storey was convicted of breaking into her apartment, across the hall from his, and slashing her throat with a kitchen knife on Feb. 2, 1990. | The fight against the death penalty.. ( Newspaper article translated from Dutch..) Last May 2nd they got married Gea de Vos (39) from Leeuwarden and the American Walter Timothy Storey (33). People get married all the time, but Gea's Tim has been on Missouri deathrow for the last 14 years for a crime he didn't commit. He claimes to be innocent and Gea is absolutly convinced that Tim is telling the truth. Tim got sentenced to death for the alleged killing of his mom's nextdoor neighbor Jill Lynne Frey back in 1990. Storey never confessed to the murder and is maintaining his innocence till this day. Friday night February 2nd 1990 the then, 22 year old Tim, married one year with a one year old daughter living in Georgia – is spending the weekend at his mom's house in St Charles Missouri and has a few beers with some friends and smokes a joint. When the slim built Tim comes home and walkes up the stairs of the appartment he's attacked by a big and strong man. He is forced to walk up the stairs and to knock on Jill's door. Then the guy cuts him with his knife and knockes him over the head. Tim falls down unconcious. When he wakes up he sees that the door the Jill's appartment is open and he walkes in. He enteres the bedroom, finds Jill face down on the bedroom floor and panics. He grabs her key's and runs from the scene. He decides to go back to Georgia, but turns around and decides to go back to St Charles. The next morning the friend of Tim's mom comes over and askes if Pat ( Tim's mom) has heard from Jill. And shortly there after Jill was found murdered by some co workers. The victim had 3 broken ribs, was severely beaten, stab wounds to the abdomen and her throat was cut twice. After a short investigation Tim was arrested based on the testimonies of several witnesses. The police say: Tim went crazy because he received the divorce papers of his astranged wife. He took a kitchen knife, climbed over the balcony to Jill's appartment. Then he killed her, took her key's and the next morning he erased all the evidence. With her own toothbrush he cleaned his fingernails. He threw her car key's in the lake behind the appartment. A year and a half later Tim was sentenced to die at Potosi correctional center. 5 years ago Gea met Tim through the League Of life Holland, that sets up correspondence with deathrow inmates in the U.S.A. She was immediatly under the impression of Tim's character and his story. She decided to look in to it her self. She visited Tim once, fell in love and decided to divorce her husband. She married Tim on May 2nd of this year at Potosi correctional center in Mineral Point, Missouri. She shows the wedding picture that were made by the prison photographist and tells me that she had some nice wedding pictures made appart from the prison photo's. Gea has discovered that the prosecution's case against Tim's case is really weak. Testimonies don't match, time tables are off and Tim only made a statement. Never a confession. The police were okay with that, they never assigned him a lawyer. Recently Gea found help from an unexpected person. John McHale, the producer of the short film Unreasonable Doubt, has agreed to help her. This documentary is about Joseph Amrine who was sentenced to death in 1985 and spend 17 years on deathrow for a crime he didn't commit. Amrine was the third prisoner, after the deathpenalty was reinstated in 1976, in Missouri to escape the death penalty. DNA investigation and the help of John Mchale are the last resorts of Gea and her kids Joscha and Yvana. But untill Tim get's released, every help she can would be welcome. "I would like to find someone here in my home town, who knows what they are talking about to help me. I married Tim just last may second , but only talked to him on the phone once. It is crazy that something like this is possible." "…Baby! This is what they have printed in the newspaper here in my hometown and i am really pissed of about it because he made his own story. I just translated it from the newspaper so you can read what he wrote. Next monday i will go to the newspaper and raise hell because the article is not what Anne and i said. It is not bad but inacurate. I will have it rewritten and send to you...." |
| - Update 092003.. Hey Annez. Well the evidentiary hearings are over. The last day was just last Thursday..091803 And from what my mother in-law Pat told me over the phone Thursday all was going pretty well. I don't have all the details yet but I am sure that I will have them soon or that his hearing will be on audio on the net. So I can listent to it myself and draw my own conclusions...... I didn't hear back from my sweety yet because there is something wrongwith Pat's phone and she and Tim can't reach me for some reason. But I am sure they will call as soon as he is able too. Now all we can do is sit and wait what the verdict of the judge will be.. Pat told me that the judge remined her of me and I hope that if she is agood listener and a good judge of character she will rule in his favour. Atleast it brings us closer to a resentencing hearing and we can work from there. The prosecutor got his ass kicked. Well gotta go have a lot to do today..... namaste gea.. *********** |

Making a documentary is a lot of hard work and costs a lot of money. Being a struggling local radio/ tv station we don't have the cash to do that so we are looking for people who are willing to donate money or sponsor us to get us to the states and shoot this documentary. I know I am asking for a lot but it is for a good cause. I have a film crew but I don't have the cash. So who is willing to help me help my husband? If there is a possibility that 'you' can or you know someone who may want to invest in this cause..a man's life..please e-mail me. Sincerely Gea Storey de Vos |
