Ulster Grand Prix |
1960 was the 32nd UGP and the crowd was estimated at 100,000, a record in itself . All records were broke in a day where mechanical gremlins hit the top riders . It was also the first year for a Japanese bike to be entered, Honda . The weather was another bonus to the organisers, it was good . |
The 125 cc race got off to a good start and at the end of the first of 10 laps it was M.V. riders Gary Hocking and Carlo Ubbiali, Alberto Gandossi |
![]() The 350 cc race was led by M.V. works rider John Surtees, with Alan Shepherd (A.J.S.) tight on his tail . At the end of the lap they were still that way and John Hartle, Bob McIntyre (Nortons) and Franta Stastny (Jawa) were quite some distance behind . At the end of the next lap Surtees had broke the lap record, Shepherd was still tight on his tail and Stastny and McIntyre had retired . The positions remained the same over the next few laps and on the 6th lap in view of the grandstand Shepherd swept past Surtees . This was short lived however as he didn't finish the lap . A timing pin split and that ended his historic moment, he still had his moment of glory though, as he broke the new lap record . After this the excitement was over and at the finish line it was Surtees in 1st, Hartle in 2nd, Hugh Anderson (A.J.S.) in 3rd and Bob Anderson (Norton) in 4th . |
The 250 cc race promised to be an exciting race . M.V. riders Gary Hocking and Carlo Ubbiali were level pegging on points in the Championship table . Hocking was the initial leader and by the end of the lap he was 2 seconds ahead of Ubbiali, and Honda riders Jim Redman and Tom Phillis were not far behind Ubbiali . By the 3rd lap Ubbiali had closed the gap and a tremendous battle ensued . This didn't last long for Hocking retired shortly after with clutch trouble . Ubbiali then slowed his pace and this allowed the Hondas to catch up, but Ubbiali still finished the race 2 seconds ahead of Phillis . Redman was a further second adrift . This was M.V.s last year to contest the 250 cc class so Ubbiali decided to call it a day, after clinching the 125 cc and 250 cc World titles . |
The 500 race was one of the most exciting races for quite some time . John Surtees (M.V.) rocketed into the lead and by the end of the lap he was 0.25 miles (0.4 km) ahead . At the end of lap 2 it was Bob McIntyre who appeared first, followed by Mike Hailwood (Norton), Alan Shepherd (Matchless) and John Hartle (Norton) . Surtees came in in 18th position and made a pit stop, a broken gear lever was the problem . 3.5 minutes later he reappeared . McIntyre gradually built up a good lead over Hailwood who was battling with Hartle for 2nd place . By the end of the 5th lap Surtees was up to 25th place and was lapping at 96.94 mph (155.10 km/h) . By the 10th lap McIntyre was still leading, Hailwood was 2nd and Surtees was now up to 11th place . At the end of the 11th lap Hailwood appeared as the leader, but coasted into the pits to retire . Next to appear was McIntyre and he also retired . Hartle was the new leader, with Shepherd in 2nd place . Surtees was now in 6th place and was 2 minutes 7 seconds behind the leader . By the 14th lap Surtees had reduced this to 1 minute 55 seconds . On the 16th lap he lapped at 99.32 mph (157.83 km/h) and Hartle had lost 15 seconds by refuelling . Surtees was still 31 seconds behind and was starting the final lap, he was also in 2nd place . At the flag it was Hartle, with Surtees appearing in 2nd place 20 seconds later . Shepherd was 3rd and a photo finish between Rensen and Jim Redman for 4th was decided in Redman's favour . This was Surtees last appearance at the Ulster and he had just become double World Champion for the 3rd year in a row . |
